A Conversation with President of Iraq Barham Salih date 20/04/2020

President of Iraq

This is a special webcast in a series by the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) entitled “Coronavirus, Asia, and the World.” Throughout the coming weeks, ASPI will be presenting web-only programs to analyze the scope of the ramifications from the novel coronavirus across the Asia-Pacific region and the world. All events will be live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook. For information about future events in this series and for ASPI’s additional coronavirus content see here.
The coronavirus has struck Iraq as it faces a multitude of political, economic, and security challenges. The country shares a lengthy border with Iran, which has become the epicenter for the virus in the Middle East. Widespread protests starting last fall led to the resignation of Iraq’s prime minister and prolonged political uncertainty. In January, Iraq became the theater for a direct military encounter between the United States and Iran. Economically, Iraq is facing enormous budget pressure with the collapse of oil prices. It is also dealing with enormous humanitarian and reconstruction challenges which are a legacy of the campaign against ISIS.
The Asia Society Policy Institute is pleased to welcome President of Iraq Barham Salih for a special event. President Salih will discuss the impact of the coronavirus, his political and economic vision for Iraq, and Baghdad’s perspective on U.S.-Iran tensions. He will be joined in conversation by ASPI Senior Fellow Puneet Talwar.
